In the process of researching Braided in Fire, author Solace Wales assembled a trove of images related to the village battle which took place the day after Christmas, 1944. The photographs document various events and people tied to the WWII battle—the Italian peasants of Sommocolonia and the African-American infantrymen of the 366th Infantry Regiment.
